Fun for young and old alike

The Maze
The Maze at Schönbrunn was laid out between 1698 and 1740 and consisted of four different parts with a central (probably elevated) pavilion from which the maze could be seen as a whole. During the 19th century the Maze was gradually abandoned until in 1892 the last remaining hedges were felled. In autumn 1998 a new maze extending over 1.715 m2 with a viewing platform at its centre was laid out taking the historical model into account where possible.

The labyrinth
The labyrinth, reconstructed according to the original, historical design, invites you to come and discover its secrets. Covering an area of 2,700m2, there are plenty of games to try out for big and small. For example, use your fingers to solve mazes or hop your way across the bouncing boards. A giant kaleidoscope lets you see yourself from every possible angle.

Our sporty visitors can climb our "chiming climbing pole"; but it only counts if you ring the bell at the top! And for everyone who likes a mental challenge: try the mathematic riddle. Numbers on stone plates tell you how many steps you're allowed to take, by the end you should find yourself right in the middle of the game. There's a more complicated version for math wizards. All this and more is waiting to be discovered!

The Labyrinthikon Playground
Another highlight is the Labyrinthikon, designed by playground design expert Günter Beltzig, a playground for experimenting and romping for all generations - children and adult alike!

Discover this playful opportunity for relaxation for young and old.

The Gloriette is currently being restored in accordance with the Austrian Federal Monuments Office. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2016. Access to the panoramic terrace (open until November 6, 2016) and to the Café Gloriette is possible without restriction.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused!

The structure consists of a central section in the form of a triumphal arch, flanked by arcaded wings with lofty semi-circular arches.

The central section, which was glazed during the last year of Maria Theresa's life, is crowned with a mighty imperial eagle perching on a globe and surrounded by trophies.

The flat roof with its retaining balustrade was already being used as a viewing platform by the beginning of the 19th century. It can be accessed today via a stairway

Besides the external flight of steps leading up to the glazed central section, which today houses Café Gloriette, there are additional lateral flights of steps which are lined with massive sculpted trophies.

Enjoy the impressive view from the Panorama Terrace over the Schönbrunn site and a large part of Vienna. The glass-windowed central section now contains a cafe.

The Privy Garden, known in German as the Crown Prince Rudolf Garden, is part of the Meidling Kammergärten which lie immediately in front of the east façade of the palace, and received its name around 1870, after apartments had been furnished for Crown Prince Rudolf on the ground floor of this wing. The four sections of the parterre are enclosed by formal beds and centre around an ancient yew tree.

As the garden is sheltered from the wind, during the summer months it is home to a splendid display of specimens from the valuable collection of citrus trees of the Federal Parks and Gardens Authority.

The immediately adjacent section of the gardens goes by the curious name of "On the Cellar" and is one of the oldest parts of the gardens at Schönbrunn. It was laid out directly above the cellar of the court kitchen, which was constructed around 1700.

Follow in the footsteps of the imperial family and stroll through the shady arcade of the former Privy Garden. The impressive patterns of the beds are particularly apparent from the modern viewing pavilion.
