Porcelain Room

The Porcelain Room was used by Maria Theresa as her study and for playing card games. Wooden framework decoration carved and painted blue and white in imitation of porcelain covers the walls of the room right up to the ceiling. This might have been designed by Maria Theresa's daughter-in-law, Isabella of Parma, who was the first wife of Emperor Joseph II. The 213 blue ink drawings set into this framework are copies of pictures by Boucher and Pillemont executed by Emperor Franz Stephan and some of his children.

The Porcelain Room is thus one of those rooms in the palace which owe their appearance to contributions by members of the imperial family and which lend this imperial residence a private, personal touch.
